Honestly, when you think of a group that essentially has 3 girls doing nothing but vocals and dancing around and doing hand motions and stuff with the songs, with some random backing band that’s essentially meaningless (they even face away from the crowd i guess to make it clear they’re not the main attraction, but at least it’s not a backing tape)… do you expect to see something great? I didn’t, and around 7ish last night I was thinking “how entertaining can this be, I should skip it my computer is currently busted and I’m grumpy”. I’m really glad I surpressed the urge to stay home and be grumpy, as this sort of show was the best possible thing to un-grump someone I think. You have to be an incredibly terrible person with a heart made of pure evil to not enjoy this band. (I think). It’s great if you have ADD, since they have exactly zero songs that are over 3 minutes. They even played a BUNCH of new songs! They were full of energy and fun and I don’t know why I doubted it for even a second. I’ve had lowered expectations of every band with only one album headlining a show for a long time now (usually they just play the album as exactly as they can do it, not much interesting to it), but The Pipettes were above and beyond anything I could have imagined.

If you love music, you owe it to yourself to do whatever it takes to see The Pipettes whenever they come to your town.

BONUS TRACK on this one. Did anyone else really dig the opening band Smoosh? If they’re rocking out like that and they’re like 13 or something, what the hell are they going to do when they’re in their 20’s? Most high school bands are crap. These guys aren’t even junior high and they’re already better than a lot of opening acts I’ve seen. Amazing. So I’m tossing up an mp3 of their cover of This Modern Love by Bloc Party which I thought was really really cool. It’s one thing to rock out on your own stuff, but something else entirely to cover Bloc Party of all bands, which isn’t your typical standard rock band. Awesome stuff.

I think they used to call this kind of thing “Bananarama,” actually. I’m glad that sort of aesthetic continues in some form!
